Prepare for success

It is a recurring theme in every project that when faced with some form of unexpected reality, brought alight by the contractor, clients are taken back and as an initial reaction they turn to those they know best (their entire design team) and blame them for not guessing what may or may not lay behind a wall/floor/roof etc... In fact, I have even heard complaints against solutions designed by engineers which are there to both meet statutory and CDM obligations and ultimately to look after their (the client's) best interest.

Under normal circumstances, when faced with a challenge, the contractor and the team will work together to find an alternative that overcomes the challenge and the project will move forward. However, it is a delicate moment

As an #arkhlient you will be aware that surprises will come up and that rather than pointing fingers , what the team (under your leadership) should do is open a discussion and look at the problem from all angles.

You will also know that in order to minimise surprises, the more preparation you do the better it will be and that the earlier you involve the contractor and facilitate discussions between them and the rest of the team, the sooner you will build a sense of common purpose.
